Where in the world is CD: South Africa

Posted on by crazydaisy

The March 2010 Main Kit went all the way to South Africa (isn’t that cool?) and landed in the hands of able crafter Sophia Allison. Here’s everything you’d ever want to know about Sophia! And then … some of the awesome things she created with the March 2010 Main Kit.

All about Sophia:

1. I started scrapbooking in October 2001, just before hubby and I got married that in November, so it came at just the right time of when we started our journey together.

2. My favorite scrapbooking product, tool or manufacturer is American Craft, purely because they have such a huge variety of products from cardstock, pattern paper to very exciting embellishments, and don’t forget the Thickers, a girl can never have too many you know.

3. My favorite thing to scrapbook about is my family, simply because we are always up to something or other and I love to document about it. I want to be able to have something that my girls can look back to when they are older.

4. I scrapbook because it is my way I can relax and loose myself. It is my “ME” time to just be creative. There is nothing better than music in the background, a glass of red wine and pure scrapping bliss with no interruptions…

5. I am the happiest when I am spending time with my family and just being us.

6. Crafting in my country of South Africa, has certainly grown more and more over the years. I find that most local South African scrappers love to create double pages, but most are also converting to single pages more and more. I for one, prefer my single pages as I can get a lot more down faster.

7. The hardest part of being a crafter in South Africa, would certainly be the fact that it is so hard to come by the new releases as soon as they are launched overseas at CHA. It takes a while to get here, and because they have to be imported here, it makes the cost of the product pricey. Most of the time a group of us order together from the US and share the postage, that way it works out much cheaper than local. Although I must say in the last few years, we have some locals that have started producing their own home-grown products. example Fab Scraps  and Art from the Heart.

8. I’m most inspired by new product and pretty embellishments, like bling swirls etc.

9. If I could meet any crafter in the world it would be Elizabeth Kartchner. I think she is so funky and seems to be so down to earth. I love her style that she conveys on her projects, she likes to capture the mood in her photos and in such fun ways, she really makes scrapbooking look so easy, and because I can so relate to her with my 2 sweet girls.

10. What influence, if any, does the country which you are from have on your scrapping? Nothing really, as I scrap for myself as an individual. I do have a huge following on my blog that motivates me to be even more creative.

And a bonus question:

My favorite scrappy or crafty web site is Crazy Daisy Kits, is there any other…um no!

Thank you Sophia for sharing your talent with us! It’s so much fun to get to know other scrappers around the globe! Check back this weekend for hints on where the April 2010 Main Kit ended up. I’m going to make the clues harder this time!!

Itty Bitty scraps

By Grace Tolman

Hi guys! I’m sure most, if not all of you, have already received your March kit and you’ve probably made a few layouts here and there with the kit. By the way, don’t you just adore the main kit? The colors work so well together and the embellishments are just plain fun!

Well I don’t know about all of you but I’m one to save every little piece of paper that I can. Sometimes that’s a bad thing (you should see my scrap bin) but for the most part, those itty bitty pieces usually result to some cool new design that I haven’t thought about.

So today let me share with you three cards that I made with my leftover supplies from the March main kit.

These three cards were mainly put together with my kit scraps! I love the idea that by saving all my little strips of paper, I was able to make them come together (in small dozes) and bring color and design to my solid colored cards.

I added a few silk flowers from my own stash but for the most part my kit provided me with so much products to work with.

So that’s my share for today. Before you throw those itty bitty pieces of paper or products away, do a double check on them, you’ll never know what “bit” of inspiration you can get from them.

Till next time,
Grace

Grace’s Place: Layouts

Posted on by crazydaisy

I’m always amazed at the wonderful pages that Grace creates. She is super talented and if you ever read her blog you’ll know that she’s beyond busy, crazy organized and pretty much super mom. I envy the grace she shows in each day of her life. Grace is awesome.

Now, here are some layouts Grace created using the March 2010 Main Kit. Enjoy!

**********************************

1. Bookworm

In this layout, I was talking about my son’s new found interest in stories on tape. So to emphasize the theme/story of the page, I grabbed one of the chipboard shaped page from the MME minibook and used that as a template to cut out my pattern papers. I adhered the papers over each other as to mimic book pages.

I also added the part of the Prima rhinestone swirls here, the MME kraft tag and the yellow ribbon. I added a button on the ribbon for interest, having the paper thread go under the ribbon so when I tied the button, it created a cool crease on the ribbon as well.

2. A dreamer

I love this page because (a) I was able to play with some new actions I got online and dressed up my picture. I love that this new photoshop action made a cool distressed look for my picture and (b) I was able to add a lot of pattern papers into this layout without overwhelming the photo.

Remember, if you are combining lots of pattern papers, make sure you pick designs and elements in there that doesn’t distract with each other. Pick at least one dots, one stripe, one floral, one solid, etc. This way you have all the designs represented and yet it’s doesn’t overwhelm the page. Also make sure you do them in moderation. Size matters.

3. Happy Reunion

The lovely Basic Grey papers in the kit really makes a page pop with color. I emphasized two of them here.

I also added a border and journaling sticker from the Crate paper sheet and cut out a flower from one of the Crate paper pattern papers to add as an embellishment.

Another thing that made this page so fast to make are the transparent word and shamrock embellishment.

4. Lucky Gold

With this page, I wanted the focus to go to my pictures so I chose a more neutral colored patterned paper for background and added a few smaller strips of the other papers as a border in the middle.

I also added the canvas letters here from Little Yellow Bicycle and the calendar embellishment as well.

To highlight the dates, I grabbed two small circle stickers from the Crate Paper sticker sheet, hand cut out the centers and stuck it on the specific dates.

5. San Onofre Beach

Here’s my two page spread for this month. I can’t say it enough that this kit can give me so much product to make 4 pages PLUS one two page layout. That for me is really awesome.

I used one of the Crate paper stickers for my flower and to cover the lines (for journaling) I added another flower and a button.

There were some pictures that I didn’t feel good showing off, but I still wanted them to be included in this page. These are pictures that I only want my family to see, so to overcome my little dilemma, I added a small folded album on the right edge with pattern paper. I cut a piece that’s just a bit bigger than my pictures, folded it and tucked the pictures inside.

Thank you for looking and hope you enjoy your March kit.

Grace

Creating a  mini book

By Katie Turner

Hi everyone, Katie here. I hope you’ve all ordered your kits and are super excited to play with them! I know I was beyond stoked to receive the kit in the mail and sift through all the goodies. Wow, that’s all I can say. Did you know my favorite colors are green and brown? I’m really on a yellow kick lately, too, so needless to say, the March 2010 kit had me covered! I’m particularly fond of the mini from My Mind’s Eye (green flocking? Check. Swirls galore? Check. An awesome silhouette of a bird? Check. Cream chipboard pages? Check!!!), Crate Paper’s fun, doodled journaling spots, the printed ribbon, the shimmery cardstock … Wait, if I list everything, I’ll be here forever. Instead, allow me to stop rambling and share a more visual post with you.

I have a certain approach to my mini albums and how I create each page in them. I’m sure most of you do, too, but I thought it might be fun if I gave you a peek at my process/a tutorial of sorts to ponder over. Here goes:

With this particular mini, I thought it’d be fun to use lace cardstock that I had sitting around in my stash as a base for my pages. I really love paint and it adds such a gorgeous, handmade feel to whatever project I’m working on, so I couldn’t resist it. As you can see, my stenciling wasn’t perfect — I like being able to see little brush strokes here and there, but if you don’t, no worries: You can always use some removable/temporary adhesive (tape runners are nice) to hold your cardstock down while you paint over it. I chose to mix brown, green, and yellow together to form a color that’s similar to the flocking. I don’t like to mix my paint completely; I have always liked to see the individual colors in different places, but to each her own! Anything goes. :)

Notice the slight tear and the yellow spot? That was me experimenting. I do that a lot and if something doesn’t work out or I decide against it (like I did here), I just cover it up. It’s a great way to stretch your creativity.

Next, I made a stencil out of an old label sticker I had by sticking the outline of it (or the “waste” — the part that’s left after the actual sticker is gone!) to a piece of cardstock and cutting out the middle. I used this shape throughout the album to help create a flow from page to page. You can use any shape you’d like; I just happen to like brackets and like using homemade stencils as well. I then grabbed a sheet of paper and traced the shape on it four times before cutting it out and then hand stitching just inside the edges with brown thread to create a nice accent for each embellishment.

Then, I laid the embellishments out as shown above. I turned the center shape on its side for visual interest — everything lined up straight in a row can get boring. I attached the embellishments with glue dots once I was satisfied with their placement.

For this particular page, I used two mock photo booth strips to display photos of one of my favorite houses in the city where I live. (By the way — the photo booth strip is from here).

I just manipulated it in PhotoShop and cropped out the existing photos.) Visual interest played another role in my decision to slightly overlap the strips. I feel they look better that way than when placed side by side.

Finally, the only thing left to do was embellish! I slid part of the printed transparency with the blue design on it underneath one of the paper shapes, plucked a teal pearl from the Prima swirls and glued it to the center of the pretty green button, made a paper flower and embellished it with some blue trim I had on my desk, cut the “One of a kind” sentiment off one end of the journaling card included in the kit, and added the journaling stickers. Voila! That’s my process in a nutshell, although I switch things up here and there.

If you’re interested in seeing the rest of the mini… Here you go:

It’s all about the city I live in and the love I have for the beautiful, old buildings downtown. I am definitely a city girl! The last page features lyrics by Adele, whose song of the same name inspired my mini. If you haven’t heard the song yet… Well, you must! Click here to watch her music video on YouTube!

Well, that’s it for me. I hope you enjoyed my post as much as I enjoyed sharing it with you! Please let me know what you think in the comments. Till next time, have fun creating!

What a week …

Posted on by crazydaisy

A layout using the March 2010 Main Kit from Amber Zimmerman

Hello there.

Happy Thursday.

I’ll be glad when this week is over!

This week has turned out to be one heck of a week. Shipping weeks are always crazy and Wednesday was shipping day. Making matters worse … I have pneumonia. My baby has RSV. And worst of all, Jennifer’s mother-in-law passed away unexpectedly. Jennifer is such a trooper. She flew back home from Utah, where her in-laws live for just a single day so she could get the March kits out. Then on just a few hours of sleep, she drove back to Utah with her kids to help prepare for her mother-in-law’s funeral. Bless her heart. And bless her dedication.

As I type this I am amazed at all the wonderful blessing I have in my life. I’m blessed with a hard working, dedicated business partner, who will do whatever it takes to “make it happen.” I’m blessed to have concerned and helpful family members who make sure I’m taking care of myself and getting better. I am beyond lucky to have a nanny who helps me with my kiddos (I’m almost embarrassed to admit I have a nanny, but I do .. ).

Today, while I was sleeping (I was up most of the night coughing and tending to a sick baby) I was woken by the smell of something delicious. I came downstairs to find my amazing nanny making dinner for my family. Making dinner for us is not part of her job. Occasionally, she feeds my kids dinner. But she doesn’t cook for me or my hubby. However, seeing how sick I have been she decided she wanted to make dinner for us. How lucky am I?

I’m also lucky to have the world’s best design team. As our kits make their way to you, let me share a little inspiration with you courtesy of some of the ladies on our design team.

First up, is the talented Miss Amy:

I can’t resist. I just have to show you a little something from March. It’s a complete departure from what we did in February and it’s just so luscious!

Did you see the new Lush line from My Mind’s Eye? Well, we did. We loved it. We had to get it. And it’s one of the featured items in our March 2010 Main Kit. The mini for March is the lovely Green Lush Album!

Are you excited? I hope so, ’cause this is one great kit. I’m about to add the March 2010 Main Kit to our shopping cart. That way, if you really want it, you can pre-order. Remember, if you order now … you’re kit won’t ship until March 10th. And if you are already a Crazy Daisy subscriber, no worries –  you’re kit is already reserved.
