A crafty weekend

Sunday, March 7th, 2010

I normally take the weekends off from blogging. With busy kiddos (my little one is crawling now and has discovered the dog’s water bowl and the stairs!) I have my hands full. My hubby is an accountant so this is a busy time of year for him, which means he’s working a lot of weekends. But, I decided I wanted to share some of the projects I’ve been working on. I’m obsessed with Glimmer Mist and canvases right now. I completed one canvas on Friday night and I have been working on three other projects this weekend with the help of my five year old (she loves all things crafty and has an amazing eye for design).

Here’s the first project I finished. I used this tutorial as a guide and then went to town. I used some Crate Paper chipboard shapes, a variety of Glimmer Mists and Maya Mists, Thickers Alphas, and I made/painted the sun myself. I also cut come of the words out from a newspaper.

Here’s another prject I’m working on. It’s a present for my daughter’s kindergarten teacher. As Shelby watched me make my “Here Comes the Sun” piece, she wanted to make something of her own. She decided it should be for Miss Burns and she told me what it should say .. “The more you learn, the more you grow.” She said this was because Miss Burns helps her learn! Isn’t that the cutest?

Shelby helped me with every step of this canvas. She sprayed Glimmer Mist. She spread Gesso. She helped me paint chipboard letters. We added Glimmer Mist to some white, glitter Thicker letters. It’s not quite done … but it’s coming along. Shelb also made a little canvas that says “Miss Burns, I love you.”

We layered the canvas with a bunch of different Glimmer Mist colors. I think this was Shelby’s favorite part. It was a little tough to get her to stop! She wanted to spray. Spray. And spray some more.

Here’s a look at where the projects are now. We still have to actually glue all the parts down. And add some more embellishments. But they are looking quite cute if you ask me!

My mom sent me a link to a tutorial to make the cutest flower hair clips (see photo below). Go Mom! I love this idea. I was at my mom’s house last week and she was admiring the hair clip Shelby was wearing. I bought the clip from The Pleated Poppy … the hair clip has now become one of Shelby’s favorites, but they are a little expensive for a 5-year-old who had a tendency to misplace her hair bows! Instead, I want to make her some that I don’t mind if she destroys, misplaces or generously gives to her playmates. This tutorial is both easy and cute.

Have  you been to Heidi Swapp’s blog lately? She is our guest designer for April and has started to create with a few of the goodies from that kit. Check it out! And have you ever watched Heidi’s live Web show? If not, I suggest you check it out. It’s really awesome and you come away from it with tons of ideas and inspiration.

Hope you’re having a great weekend. I’d love to hear what crafty projects you’re working on!

February Projects

Friday, February 12th, 2010

Since the February Kits are somewhere between us and you … I thought I’d share some fun layouts created using the February 2010 Main Kit.

A big thanks to Grace Tolman for helping us out and creating some awesome layouts this month. I’ll be posting her mini-book (as well as more layouts) some time next week, so make sure you check back. If you haven’t been to Grace’s blog, check it out. She is super talented. And don’t be surprised when you see her layouts in tons of magazines (Creating Keepsakes and Scrapbooking Trends to name a few). This girl is all over and so worth checking out.

Bowling Baby

I love the combos of green and pink. It screams girl to me so that’s what I used to make this page about my daughter in her first bowling experience.

I had a few pictures to scrap but I still made room for the title, enough journaling spot and spot embellishments.

I used the Pink Paislee stickers as part of my title and hand wrote the rest. I also created a visual triangle between the white on the journaling block, the sticker embellishment and rub-on butterfly.

Curly Q

I love this picture of my daughter. It just so happened to fit the bill of the theme of my page which is all about her curly hair.

I used the lovely shaped paper from Fancy pants. I added some subtle hearts on the paper by using the heart lace cardstock as a mask and spraying glimmer mist on the paper. It’s subtle but I love the added effect of it.

I used the flowers from one of the pattern papers and used them as accents. I added the flower trims here too. One as a trim and another cut out to make separate accents. The ticket stub was added here too.

Today’s inspirational thought

Wednesday, January 27th, 2010

Jennifer and I text a lot. We are both VERY busy, but we can always manage to fit in a little time to send a text or two (or three … ). Today I got a text from Jen that shared the following inspirational thought:

“Stop thinking. Thinking is the enemy of creativity.”

Amen sister. Isn’t that the case for a lot of us? We over think. We over plan. We stress ourselves out. And in the end, we either don’t have time to be creative or we get stuck at the starting point.

Last Saturday, Jennifer and I took a class from Stacy Julian. In the course of the 2-hour class we started and FINISHED a 6×6 album. Stacy calls the technique “Finish Line Scrapbooking.” I call it brilliant. In the most basic terms, you simply take all the hard work out of scrapping and just scrap. You think simple, plan less and just create. How wonderful is that?

I took some notes from Stacy’s class, which I promise to share. But they are buried in my CHA bag and right now my kids need a little mommy time …. actually, mommy needs a little kid time :)

So, check back tomorrow. We’ll talk fast scrapping then. And I’ll also tell you a little more about CHA, our February goodies and the future!

Happy Wednesday to you!

So Much to See

Monday, January 25th, 2010

CHA is awesome.

There is so much to see. There is so much to inspire. There is just … so much.

As we start our Monday morning (Jennifer is still asleep), we are excited, but exhausted. We’ll be headed back over to the convention center in a few hours to start shopping. We spent all of yesterday searching out the best goodies and now we’re ready to buy, buy and buy some more.

Lush-Green2

This is what I can tell you. We are so loving the Lush Flocked Albums (photo above) from My Mind’s Eye (look for them to show up in a kit, very soon … like March). These puppies are new, they are way cool and they totally changed the direction of the March Kit. You’re gonna love it!

We love the vintage look of Melissa Frances. Yesterday we meet Melissa and she walked s through her booth and showed us everything. Seriously, she is the nicest person ever and she has such a fun, shabby chic style. Normally, I don’t do shabby chic. But she has some really adorable products, which will be showing up in a future kit (Psst, it ill be April if you really must know!).

DEV

Kaisercraft is rad. They has the best make ‘n take with the coolest goody bag yesterday. We made a fabulous mini book, which will be the basis of future kits as well. Do you love peach, brown and blue? We do! The Devonshire collection was our fav (photo above).

Some of our other favorites: Basic Grey (of course), Tattered Angels, Crate Paper, GCD Designs, Webster Pages … just to name a few. all of those I just mentioned, will be purchased today (and then some)!!!

Gotta go … off to shop! Check back for more info as the week goes on. I might even take some pictures today!

Blog post of note

Friday, November 13th, 2009

I was scanning crafty blogs between meetings, and I found a blog post on Craft Gossip I just have to share:

10 Reasons why you may want to join a Kit Club

I totally agree with the whole list, but especially wanted to point out my favs on the list:

2. If you’re busy with work, home, kids or school (or all of the above) it’s easy to grab your kit and get creating when you have some free time.

3. If you’re looking to think outside your creative “box”, a kit can challenge you with products you might not have chosen for yourself.

8. If you don’t live close to a Local Scrapbooking Store or a craft store, a kit club can meet your supply shopping needs.

9. A kit is a good way to use your scrapbooking budget while ensuring you are receiving the newest and hippest products

Fun tutorials

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I was poking around the Internet. Yes, I do this a lot. I find I send a ton of time online when I am traveling for my “real” job. This week I’m in Toronto, where it is super cold for this Arizona girl. I’m more than happy to lounge in my pajamas, order room service and surf the Web. It’s way too cold for me to do anything else.

Anyway, I found some cool tutorials I wanted to share.

mixmedia

A mixed media canvas that’s to die for (picture above).

A fun paint technique courtesy of the folks over at Maya Road (have I mentioned I love Maya Road?)

magazine-bow-finished

A super cute way to recycle your magazines  ANDcreate fun bows for your gifts and such (photo above), from the “How About Orange …” blog.  On a separate note, the “How About Orange …” blog is a super cool blog with lots of fun links to crafty sort of tutorials. I highly recommend you checking back often. It rocks.

And last, but not least … a tutorial on how to create some cool vintage looking earings.

Watch this video

Tuesday, October 27th, 2009

My husband shared this video last night. We watched it with headphones on, just like the people in the video. Seriously, so heartwarming. Watch it with someone you love.

Close-ups from Celine

Wednesday, September 23rd, 2009

As promised … I worked out my technical issues and have some more photos from the layouts Celine Navarro created using our September Main Kit.

Using your September Kit

Thursday, September 3rd, 2009

I know I say this every month, but I think this month’s kit in my favorite. I really love the color combinations and all the 7 Gypsies goodies. While you’re waiting for your kit to arrive in your mailbox, here are some layouts from one of our designers, Grace Tolman, for some inspiration and ideas. Get scrappin’!

A

This layout features my stepdaughter’s graduation picture. Because it was a professional photo, I wanted to maintain the focus on it so I kept everything else to a minimum.

I found a great quote that matched the event of the pic and used that as my journaling.

I used the stickles and flowers to create a feminine accent to the page. I wanted to match the brad with my glitter stems so I picked a dark blue brad and added stickles on top of it (letting it dry completely before adding it to my flowers) for that extra shine.

****************************

Natural Match

Because the kit consists of everything in the distressed and rugged style, I incorporated that by distressing the background paper. I first sewn around the paper, 1/2″ inside the page then run my scissor blade through the entire paper. I think sewing the page first helps you to not go way too much in with the distressing. It also allows some type of grounding for your page.

Since the main focus for me is always the picture, I decided to “scatter” hearts punched out from the pattern papers in the kit so I don’t overpower the picture collage. By the way, I made the collage in Picasa, which is so easy to use. It gave me the easiness of using more than one photo on a page without worrying too much where each one will go.

I sprayed glimmer mist of the two tags (that came in the kit) and tied it. It housed my computer generated journaling.

I loved the look of overlapping letters. It created texture and added dimension to the page.

****************************

She did it (all by herself)

This two page spread was made easy with 4×6 uncropped photos and strips of pattern paper. I created a visual triangle with the horizontal and vertical paper strips plus the tags that housed my journaling and title.

I added stitching and border (from punches) onto the paper strips for added interest

To seperate the title and journaling, I added circle stickers from the 7 Gypsies sticker sheet.

****************************

School boy

Here’s another example of how versatile the papers are. Although they have the vintage feel, you can still use it for your more modern pictures.

I was inspired to pull these pics of my son (one is the beginning of the year and one on the last day of school) from the abc ribbon. I loved the look of comparison (from first day to last) It shows the growth of my little boy.

My tip of layering pattern papers, small designs are best to use in majority while big, bold designs should be used sparingly or at the least degree. That way the bold designs don’t overpower the rest of your elements on the page.

The lined paper helped me keep my title and journaling straight. I also made my son write his full name. I love the concept of preserving handwritings as well.

****************************

Temple date

I have to say that I’m not use to such dark tones to work with. You can usually find bright colors on my page so it was hard to pick pictures to use for this kit, but one thing that made a match was these pictures of my date with hubby last year. We try to do some spiritual dates once in a while. It balances out all our movie nights. :)

Here I part of the shaped pattern paper to lead the eye to the photos.

Because the ribbon is a school themed item, I used the back side of it and fancied it up with the basic grey rub ons included in the kit.

I also used the gaffer tape to make my ribbon. It’s very easy to twist it around to make a circle because of the adhesive already on the ribbon/tape.

Because my “e” on the title had the same color as my red paper, I added some hearts behind it to make it pop more. The two hearts also made a good symbolism for a love page like this.
