Crazy busy

Posted on by crazydaisy

Hello there.

It’s me. I’m running around like a chicken with its head cut off (this reminds me of a funny story about my mom, but I’ll have to save that for later).

I leave for Brazil tomorrow and I’m in the final stages of getting everything ready. Since I’m the mama … I feel the need to make sure everything in my house is in order before I walk out the door.

Laundry must done.

Groceries for the week purchased.

Mid-week field trips prepped for (Shelby has an overnight camping trip next week, yikes. So I have to get her packed for that and make sure our nanny can watch the little one while daddy camps with the big one … see what I mean about crazy).

Birthday party presents wrapped (Shelby is oh so popular and has lots of parties to attend!).

Fish food secured (poor fish hasn’t eaten in a week).

And the list goes on. And on. And on … it’s a lot to remember. And I pride myself on remembering it all and getting it all done. I might go nuts, but it all will be done.

As I was driving Shelby to school this morning, she said to me, “Mom, I can’t wait until we get to relax. I can’t wait until we get just one day where there is no school or no work.” She went on to talk about a vacation she is planning (in her head) that will take our family to Hawaii. I sure like the way my little girl thinks. I’m ready for that day too. But in the meantime, I’m a smart, resourceful girl … so I’ll make it through the crazy. I got the following thought in my email box this morning and thought it was oh so appropriate for me at just this moment.

Even with all the craziness, I’m reminded how much I love my life and how grateful I am to have such a wonderful and full life. There’s lots of people who have never even been on an airplane and here I am traveling around the globe and taking my kids with me most of the time. … how cool is that?

As I was shopping for Shelby’s class earlier this week I was thinking about how everyone and every parent is different … and that’s okay. I might not help in Shelby’s class every week, but I do what I can, when I can. Each person has a different story. Each family has a different dynamic. When I look at my kids and see how smart and happy they are …. I know that our way is just right for us.

Have a wonderful weekend. Scrap your little hearts out for National Scrapbooking Day. I’m going to do some digi layouts and share them … hopefully I can post them while I wait for my connection to Rio in Atlanta. Otherwise, I’ll share them with you all as soon as I land in Rio. I’ll be checking in next week with pictures from Rio. And of course … the May Kits will be up tomorrow.

Hope your life is as CRAZY fun and happy as mine!

DT: Mini Book Tutorial

April 2010 Main Kit
Spring Mini Book Tutorial

By Katie Turner

1. Take your mini book apart. Needle-nose pliers will help with bending the coils back enough so that you can twist the wire out of the binding holes.

2. Set aside the back chipboard cover and three sheets of the cardstock pages. On the front chipboard cover, draw a line 6 cm (2.4 in) from the bottom. Do the same with the remaining pages after clamping them to ensure they don’t slip. Set the front cover aside.

3. Grab the American Crafts Remarks journaling stickers and cut out the bottom sticker (right below the cloud sticker). It should have a caterpillar and a branch on it. You’ll want to leave the backing on for now; just cut around the outside of the sticker, being sure to snip into the corners.

4. Center the sticker (with the backing still on it) on the lower part of the clamped stack of pages, below the line you drew earlier. Trace around it. You’ll notice that the leaves from the branch extend below where the bottom edge of the sticker should be – don’t worry about it! We’ll fix this in the next step.

5. Flip the journaling sticker around and finishing tracing.

6. You’ll end up with a slightly bigger, fancy rectangle, which is exactly what we want.

7. Now for the most time consuming part – you’ll need to cut out the window from each page in the stack, except the last two, which will be the base to make sure everything is nice and sturdy at the end of the project. You can use an X-Acto knife (which is why the pages are clamped) or trace the window on all the remaining pages and cut them out with sharp, detail-oriented scissors, like Cutterbees. It’s up to you! It doesn’t have to be perfect, so don’t fret.

8. Here’s what it should look like – don’t forget to leave those bottom two pages alone! Set the stack aside.

9. Pick up the chipboard cover, which is the one that should have the line drawn on it. An X-Acto knife is pretty helpful for the next step.

10. Gently cut along the line until the bottom piece of chipboard falls away. You won’t be needing it anymore for this project.

11. Grab the sheet of October Afternoon Thrift Shop paper – with the floral design on the front – and flip it over. Adhere the chipboard cover to the back.

12. Cut around the cover using your X-Acto knife, and you’ll end up with the base of your front cover!

13. I like to re-punch covered holes right away to make sure I know exactly where the holes are. The Crop-A-Dile is perfect for this!

14. Take your beautiful Hambly overlay with the elephants on it and adhere it on top of the floral paper. I used the top left corner of the transparency for this part, so that I’d end up with an elephant on the lower right of my chipboard cover. Remember to re-punch your holes!

15. Turn your cover over and adhere the floral paper to the back of it as well. Once again, punch, punch, punch. I also used a sanding block to sand the edges of the paper to smooth everything out, but you don’t have to.

16. Remember those three pages we set aside earlier? Grab those and trim them 6 cm (2.4 in) from the bottom. They’ll end up being the same height as your cover. Set them aside again.

17. Pick up your back cover and mark which side is the inside of it and which side is the outside; this is important because the punched holes of the front and back covers will need to match up in the end.

18. Adhere the Little Yellow Bicycle Sky Blue Check paper to both the inside and outside of the back cover. Mark the inside and outside again to help you to remember how to put things back together; if you use a pencil to do this, you can just erase the marks after you’re all done.

19. So, this is what you should have in front of you: The back cover, the stack of pages with two whole sheets on the very bottom and the rest containing windows, the cover-length pages (three in total), and the cover.

20. Bind it all back together! Twist the coil back in and then use your pliers to bend the two end wires back so that your book won’t come undone.

21. Decide which photo you want showing through the window and trim it accordingly. I left a little of the scenery to the left of mine because I’ll be embellishing that area later.

22. Adhere your photo to the back of the last page containing a window; you could also adhere it to the front of the first whole page on the very bottom of the stack.

23. Before we adhere everything together, let’s embellish the edges of the book so that we’ll have some cute edges sticking out , creating visual interest and something fun to look at. Take some of your Melody Ross cards and cut the edges off them (many are scalloped) and adhere those edges on random pages. Stagger them for more variety! I even cut one edge into small strips and adhered them along the bottom of my book.

24. Once you’re satisfied with how things look, adhere the pages together, except for the following: Leave the three shorter pages free – I just flipped them up and out of the way along with the cover – as well as the very first page with a window; we’ll be gluing the latter down later. For this step, I used Mod Podge, but you could also use dry adhesive like a tape runner. Just be aware that if you keep applying adhesive in the same places (i.e.: the edges), you’re going to create some bulk. That is okay! We’ll be decorating the edges of the pages later on. If the bulk bothers you, though, you’ll want to vary where you apply your adhesive. For example, on one page it’ll be on the very outside edge, the next an inch to the right, the next two inches to the right, etc.

25. I cut a rectangle slightly bigger than the window out of the American Crafts Remarks packaging – for this step you could use anything clear, though. Think acetate, a sheet of transparency, etc. I then adhered it to the bottom of the very top window page.

26. Afterwards, I decided to embellish the open area to the left of my photo with a Flair badge, so I lifted the outermost page and stuck the badge down inside the window. Once you’re satisfied with how things look, go ahead and glue the top page down. Your basic window is complete – aside from the embellishing, of course!

27. Next, I painted the edges of the window, as well as painting vines down the sides of the stack of pages that were adhered together. I painted the edges of my album completely green. This complements the roses I made out of thin strips of the pink cardstock also found in the kit. To create the roses, I simply distressed the edges of the strips and then coiled them together. Wrapping them around a toothpick is helpful!

28. If you have any imperfections you’re not happy with on the sides of your book, gluing the roses down over them will fix that! I also added some of the Little Yellow Bicycle Border Stickers to the bottom of the window and on the cover before I embellished it with the Prima letters. Embellish to your heart’s content!

If you end up using this tutorial, or are inspired by any part of it, please let me and the other Crazy Daisy girls see what you did with it! We can’t wait to check out your projects. :)

Trendwatch: Banners!
By Mara Campbell

Have you noticed all the banners popping up all across the scrapbooking world? It’s banner mania! This cute embellishment is super easy to add to any project, even something as small as a card. All you need is some paper and a pair of scissors. Just free hand cut some triangles, all approximately the same size. Then string them across your layout or card.

I made this card using scraps from my April kit. Those tiny scraps you don’t want to throw away, yet don’t know what to do with are perfect for banner triangles. You can add little pearls or gems in between triangles or even add string or twine at the ends.

This cute embellishment is easy to customize to whatever size, style or color you want. Dust off some deco scissors and give your banner a cute edging. Mix and match patterned paper for a fun look. Once you try a banner, you might find yourself doing one on every page!!

Happy Scrapping everyone!

May Guest Designer

Have you head the news? Stacy Julian joins us as our May Guest Designer!

Stacy, who is the mastermind behind Big Picture Scrapbooking, is well known for her work at Simple Scrapbooks Magazine and her speedy approach to scrapping …

Her official bio says, “Stacy Julian is a life and scrapbook enthusiast who thrives on attempting to do more than she ought to. She is an early riser and a student of the scriptures. She bakes brownies frequently and jogs multiple times a week (so she can eat said brownies.) A fairly recent convert to yoga, Stacy now admits to liking downward dog-something she thought she’d never say.  ‘I’m also color enthusiast, but I’m running out of neutral walls in my home to paint. It’s a good thing I have a stockpile of beautiful paper to turn to.’

Stacy has authored several books on scrapbooking, with the goal of helping other scrapbookers let go of unrealistic expectations and embrace the joy of telling personal stories. When Stacy is not working at Big Picture Scrapbooking or blogging at stacyjulian.com, she is mothering five nearly perfect children (wink), starting a new project her husband will have to finish or organizing a closet with her Dymo labeler.”

We are super excited to see what Stacy does with our May 2010 Main Kit.

4 Things: Looking Forward

Posted on by crazydaisy

1. Creative Escape 2010

Last year Jennifer and I were lucky enough to be picked to attend Creative Escape. It was an awesome experience. Loved all of the creative inspiration and left feeling super motivated to craft.  Creative Escape 2010 isn’t until the end of August, but I can’t stop thinking abou the fun in store for us.  Personally, I’m looking forward to Claudine Hellmuth’s class.  I have every book she’s written. I love her style. And I’m in awe of creativity. I can’t wait to be in the same room with her and learn some of her cool techniques. I’m also excited to have the opportunity to take a class from the amazing Jessica Sprague.I’m taking one of Jessica’s self-paced digi classes right now, and it will be cool to meet her in person and get some digi tips.

2. Cooper Walking

I know. I shouldn’t want my little boy to grow up any faster than he already is. But. He’s so close to walking and I love the walking phase. I can’t wait to see him chase his sister or our dog. right now, he’s really into holding onto my hands and walking around the house. It’s just so precious. I had forgotten how much I love this age. Everything is exciting to Cooper and it makes my life that much more exciting.

3. Books

If you know me well, you know that I’ve been a bit of a bookworm all my life. For as long as I can remember I have lost myself in books. However, life has been busy for me. The last few years have been a blur. I haven’t had a chance to read as much as I’d like. But I seem to have found more balance and I am SOlooking forward to tackling the stack of books that has been growing on my nightstand. Among the offerings?

The Last Time I saw You,” by Elizabeth Berg

The Girl Who Played with Fire,” by Stieg Larsson

Three Cups of Tea,” by Greg Mortenson

“The How of Happiness: A New Approach to Getting the Life You Want,” by Sonja Lyumbomirsky

4. San Diego Marathon

I’m walking the San Diego marathon. So is Jennifer. We have been walking our little hearts out for months now. The race is in June and we are going to squeeze in a trip to Sea World while there … so I’m not sure which I’m more excited for! No matter what, all of this walking has been good for me. I have dropped 4 pant sizes since having Cooper a year ago and 60ish pounds. I had a much better post-baby weight loss experience this time  … and that’s worth cheering for!

Where in the World is Crazy Daisy

Posted on by crazydaisy

Time to guess “Where in the World is Crazy Daisy” for April.

1. This country has a king, queen, prince … ya know, a monarchy.

2. The people who live here eat lots of fish.

3. One of Shakespeare’s great tragedies is set here.

4. The folks here know and love their beer. They even have a very strong beer named after a pachyderm.

Leave a comment with you guess. We’ll pick a winner on Saturday, May 1 when we also reveal our May Kits!

Grace’s Place: April Layouts

Posted on by crazydaisy

Need a little push to get your scrapping under way for the month of April? Here are some lovely layouts from Grace using the April 2010 Main Kit.

********************

1. Be True to You

I always like to make my first page using as much products from the kit as I can. This one is the example of that. I really loved the soft, vintage feel of the rosette flowers but I didn’t quite like the cream color of them so I sprayed some glimmer mist (from my own stash) to add some depth to them.

This layout focuses on a letter to my daughter where in I want her to remember to love herself and not allow outside influence to dictate how she would feel about her self worth.

And since it’s a feminine layout, I focused on using the softer toned papers and products. I also created added glimmer mist to one of the white flower and some of my canvas letter stickers.

2. Abalone Cove

Here I wanted my focus to be in my photos since there’s a lot of them.

I did add color and pattern to the page by creating a inward scallop border all around the page. This is made easy by the double sided papers in the kit, a 1″ circle punch and machine stitching.

I sprayed glimmer mist on the canvas letters again to make them pop out plus created visual triangle with the pinks sprinkled on the page.

3. Eat up!

This page is about my son’s enormous appetite lately. That kid can wolf down a major amount of food. I added colors to the plain background by adding the little yellow bicycle tabs as strips of pattern on the page.

I also added the cute ticket stubs from house of 3 here. These downloadable products are so convenient to use.

The title was inspired by an Eric Carle book that my kids love. And finally, I created a resist misting with the doile rubons. I transferred them onto some pattern paper, cut out the shape then sprayed glimmer mist on it. Quickly wiped it with paper towel and the result- some color added to the pattern paper but the doile rubon remained white making it standout more against the background pattern paper.

4. Up in the Air

This was a fun one to make. I divided the page into two sections. One contained a feminine touch with my pictures while the other half consisted of a little more masculine feel with my son’s pictures.

I added the maya road chipboard persons here. I decided to keep them in their raw state so that they’ll stand out better from all the pattern in the page. I added a little butterfly punch on each one to add emphasis to the “up in the air” theme.

5. Downtown Disney

Here’s my two page spread for this month. I wanted to incorporate the many papers in the page but thought that their designs were to “girly” for my theme so I used them in smaller doses, using most of them as my handmade Mickey silhouettes on the top of my pictures.
I used one of the American journaling block stickers as a base for a small collage of elements on the top right of the layout.

Where in the world is CD: South Africa

Posted on by crazydaisy

The March 2010 Main Kit went all the way to South Africa (isn’t that cool?) and landed in the hands of able crafter Sophia Allison. Here’s everything you’d ever want to know about Sophia! And then … some of the awesome things she created with the March 2010 Main Kit.

All about Sophia:

1. I started scrapbooking in October 2001, just before hubby and I got married that in November, so it came at just the right time of when we started our journey together.

2. My favorite scrapbooking product, tool or manufacturer is American Craft, purely because they have such a huge variety of products from cardstock, pattern paper to very exciting embellishments, and don’t forget the Thickers, a girl can never have too many you know.

3. My favorite thing to scrapbook about is my family, simply because we are always up to something or other and I love to document about it. I want to be able to have something that my girls can look back to when they are older.

4. I scrapbook because it is my way I can relax and loose myself. It is my “ME” time to just be creative. There is nothing better than music in the background, a glass of red wine and pure scrapping bliss with no interruptions…

5. I am the happiest when I am spending time with my family and just being us.

6. Crafting in my country of South Africa, has certainly grown more and more over the years. I find that most local South African scrappers love to create double pages, but most are also converting to single pages more and more. I for one, prefer my single pages as I can get a lot more down faster.

7. The hardest part of being a crafter in South Africa, would certainly be the fact that it is so hard to come by the new releases as soon as they are launched overseas at CHA. It takes a while to get here, and because they have to be imported here, it makes the cost of the product pricey. Most of the time a group of us order together from the US and share the postage, that way it works out much cheaper than local. Although I must say in the last few years, we have some locals that have started producing their own home-grown products. example Fab Scraps  and Art from the Heart.

8. I’m most inspired by new product and pretty embellishments, like bling swirls etc.

9. If I could meet any crafter in the world it would be Elizabeth Kartchner. I think she is so funky and seems to be so down to earth. I love her style that she conveys on her projects, she likes to capture the mood in her photos and in such fun ways, she really makes scrapbooking look so easy, and because I can so relate to her with my 2 sweet girls.

10. What influence, if any, does the country which you are from have on your scrapping? Nothing really, as I scrap for myself as an individual. I do have a huge following on my blog that motivates me to be even more creative.

And a bonus question:

My favorite scrappy or crafty web site is Crazy Daisy Kits, is there any other…um no!

*******************

Thank you Sophia for sharing your talent with us! It’s so much fun to get to know other scrappers around the globe! Check back this weekend for hints on where the April 2010 Main Kit ended up. I’m going to make the clues harder this time!!
