Oh so thankful

Thursday, November 26th, 2009

Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours.

I am thankful for this:

My boys

And I’ m thankful for this:

My daughter Shelby Rose

If I sit down for a bit and reflect on what I am thankful for, I have a lot to be grateful for. I am truly blessed.

I’m healthy.

I have a great family.

I have two wonderful and happy children, who keep me entertained and amused. I’m amazed at how bright and sweet they are. They bring me so much joy.

I have a beautiful home.

I live in a warm and cozy town that is beyond cool. There is so much to do and see here in Southern Arizona and I can still wear shorts in November!

I have more dear friends than any one person really deserves.

I’ve traveled the world.

I’ve have more than one job that I love (Crazy Daisy being  one of those jobs that I love). I’m thankful I live in a world where I can tell my story in so many different ways, from blogging to scrapping.

I am thankful … what are you thankful for?

November Mini-books! Hooray!

Wednesday, November 25th, 2009

In my opinion, one of the best things about the Crazy Daisy Kit Co. is that there is a mini book in every kit. I know that it’s tough getting all your scrapping done month after month … life keeps us all busy, doesn’t it.

I’ve found that if I bite off little bits at a time, I am more likely to keep up-to-date on my scrapping and actually get real, meanigful projects done. That’s why we wanted to have a mini book in every kit. It would give you a chance to start and finish at least one project a month. You could pat yourself on the back each month and feel great about committing your story to a mini book month after month. And then at the end of the year, you could look back and admire, not one, but 12 different mini books and their distinct perspective on your life.

For November, our design team did amazing things with the Bazzill Accordion Album from this month’s kit. I love how each of them had the same tools and supplies … but the end result is so distinct, so personal.

So, here’s a little inspiration on just what you could do with the November mini book. To let this month end without taking a little time to craft away and tell you story.

“I used all the leftover products from my making my five layouts to make this mini book. I love that Crazy Daisy kits are chock full of items that there’s no limit to how many projects you can finish with the kit.

Being a scrapbooker, I’ve accumulated a TONof pictures over the years. Most of them of course go into scrapbooks but there are certain ones that are my favorites that doesn’t go into any scrapbook category so I’m filing them here in this minibook.

I chose pictures from one year and will print them as regular 4×6 sized photos so I can slap them quickly into this book.

I’m intending to give this to my mother in law for Christmas but you can also keep this project to yourself as a brag book. I love that the Bazzill mini book is easily adaptable to any project theme.

The fun embellishments included in the kit made this project easy and full of great details.”

“This mini is for our great family friend Nancy who hosts an old fashioned hayride, bonfire fall party each year.  I used photos from years past up through this year which I thought coordinated so well with this month’s selection of papers and embellishments.  I used the Autumn Harvest Clear Cuts throughout the book and actually cut them into to use across two of the panels.

The Jenni Bowlin library cards were perfect for the bulk of my journaling throughout the mini.

This Bazzill mini accordian book has so many possibilities!  I love that you can spread this out and display the entire thing. ”

“I had a lot of fun working with the mini album included in the kit. The title of it is ‘40 reasons to be thankful in these 8 days.’

I decided to take a picture every day for 8 days, and for each day to write 5 things that I was thankful for on that day. I find that its so easy to take every day things for granted, so if I take a step back and concentrate on these little things that I am thankful for, then maybe I will be more appreciative of things.

For the cover, I cut the flower/plant design from the ribbon, and adhered to the patterned paper. I used the “to” sticker as part of my title.

For the inside pages: When you open the book, on the left hand side of each page there will be a picture of something from that day, and then on the right hand side, I have my journaling of the 5 things I was thankful for on those days I have only journaled yesterday & today (because I just started my list yesterday). So I will add the pictures to the album as I go along.”

Modern technology is quite amazing. I’m currently 30,000 feet in the air flying home to Arizona after a few days in Toronto. Thanks to the kind folks at Delta, I’m trying their new, in-flight WiFi.

I’m old enough to remember a world without cell phones, personal computers and iPods. Yet, I can’t seem to go a an hour without my smartphone! Just think what it’s going to be like for our kids? My daughter is a pro at navigating my hubby’s iPhone and she’s only five. Life is just so different. I sound like such an old lady!

So, I’ve been doing a lot reading the last few months. That’s what happens when I travel. I have a lot of free time when I’m on the road, and I like to spend it reading.  I found this quote from Albert Einstein when I was surfing the Web earlier today.

“Out of clutter, find simplicity. From discord, find harmony. In the middle of difficulty, find opportunity.”

It made me think. I need to simplify my life, get rid of clutter and find the beauty all around me.

Anyway, on to scrapbooking … the real reason you’ve come to this blog in the first place.

Here are some layouts from our fabulous design team members. First up for today is JJ Sobey.

Look Who’s Walking:

"Look Who's Walking"

"Look Who's Walking"

“This is my first layout done with the November kit. I love that the colours were perfect for these first pictures of my daughter walking. She had been walking for a couple weeks, but I’d never really caught any good photos of her. I tucked a few of the GCD Studios rub-ons around the layout. This flower one fit on the Jenni Bowlin journal tag quite nicely. I used one of the Crate Paper border stickers as a partial photo mat. It was just enough to create a little extra contrast on the side.”

Blissfully Unaware:

“Ever have one of those papers that you love both sides almost equally? And then of course, you’ve only got one sheet, right? Happens to me all the time. Usually it’s because I didn’t think to look at both sides when I was at the store. Well, the main paper in this layout was one of those papers for me – I really loved both sides. So what’s a girl to do? I cut a circle out of the middle and flipped it over! I placed another coordinating paper behind them both, for a little added contrast, and to help keep everything together.

Yes, that is my son in the background, coming at my daughter at full speed. With a stick in his hand. I’m not sure what he had in mind, but as soon as I snapped the photo, I grabbed the baby and had a few words with the boy… *sigh*

I already had this title in mind when I was editing my photos, so I was delighted to find this “Bliss” transparency in the kit – it was perfect as part of my title!

I used one of the Crate Paper journaling stickers from the kit, and I distressed edges a little, to go more with the look of my page. I also added some pop dots, because it seemed hidden next to all the flowers. The added height was just what it needed.”

Now here’s a little something from Grace Tolman:

Calendar Helper :

“In this layout I wanted to use those fun JBS notepads as part of my design so I punched out 1 1/2″ circles from the papers, cut them in half and made them as scallops on top and bottom of my picture strip. I added a fun cluster of embellishments on the top. I love transferring rubons onto cardstock, cutting them out and then adhering them to my page. I created a visual triangle between the orange letters from the title, orange brad on the cluster of embellishments and orange star by the journaling block. I also used the Crate Paper border and journaling stickers here.”

Girlfriends:

“I love the floral design from one of the Pattern papers and used that as embellishments. The size of the flowers created for a more dramatic look. I added the Pink Paislee brads on it for more texture and dimension.
I also added a rubon onto my main photo for added interest.”

Papa’s birthday:

“This double page spread was made quick with all the fun stuff in the November kit. I used some papers, the grungeboard, letter stickers and embellishments. I love the owl ribbon and it reminded me of my “old” man! Kidding aside, I thought it would be a cute addition to my dad’s birthday layout. The ribbon was a little bit too short for my 12×12 page so I added a journaling rubon, transfered first onto cardstock then cut it half.  I created a visual triangle between the two sets of grungeboard and letter stickers.  The grungeboards were painted first then sanded down to show off the circles on the board. “

You Are …  :

“I love the patterns from the papers in the kit. They provided me with lots of variety. These earth toned papers worked perfectly for these pictures of my son with the tree behind him. I angled the brown paper for some interest. I cut out the word “adore” from the bingo card and added that to my layout together with some border stickers, ribbons and lots of embellishments. Because the ribbon was thick, I added pop up dots to my photos so the ribbon won’t create a bulk underneath it.”

Beautiful Graduate:

“I chose to make this page cause the subtle colors from the background pattern paper had the same kinda blue that my step daughter’s graduation gown has. I used the transparency word as part of my title. I also used the page block in the kit as a mat for my main photo. I added journaling on the extra space around the picture. Three punched out butterflies was added for visual triangle. I also added two photo corner stickers to show the location of my daughter during their line up before the ceremony.”

Blog post of note

Friday, November 13th, 2009

I was scanning crafty blogs between meetings, and I found a blog post on Craft Gossip I just have to share:

10 Reasons why you may want to join a Kit Club

I totally agree with the whole list, but especially wanted to point out my favs on the list:

2. If you’re busy with work, home, kids or school (or all of the above) it’s easy to grab your kit and get creating when you have some free time.

3. If you’re looking to think outside your creative “box”, a kit can challenge you with products you might not have chosen for yourself.

8. If you don’t live close to a Local Scrapbooking Store or a craft store, a kit club can meet your supply shopping needs.

9. A kit is a good way to use your scrapbooking budget while ensuring you are receiving the newest and hippest products

November Main Kit Goodness

Wednesday, November 11th, 2009

I feel like I have been neglecting this blog lately, so to make this up to my loyal readers I’m going to try to do a whole lotta blogging this week!

For starters, I have lots of fun layouts to share from our design team.

First up, Kim Whitten. I love this girl. We’ve never met in person. But I look at her layouts, read her blog and feel like we’ve been friends forever. If we lived in the same place, I’m sure we’d been great buddies. But since we live on opposite ends of the country, we’re cyber-amigas.

“Admit”

“This 8 1/2 x 11 layout is from a little photoshoot I had impromptu while out taking fall foiliage pictures.  The Basic Grey letter stickers in this kit are perfect sized I think.  I cut off the wire edges from the owl ribbon that was in this kit and distressed it a little, then sewed it on my layout.  I ended up using those cut off wires as an afterthought on my journaling spot – simply added a brad, wrapped it around the brad, then spiraled it around a pencil.  Thought it added a fun, whimsical touch!”

“A Wii bit obsessed”

wii

“The 12×12 is my little cousin Jake playing the Wii and the title is “A Wii bit obsessed”  (get it?  HaHa)  :)

I used some of that awesome Basic grey Ambrosia patterned paper and grounded it on a piece of light grey card stock from my stash.  I took the textured Grungeboard and cut into circles, distressed with gesso, black ink and a little glimmer mist and added some Pink Paislee brads that are included in the kit.  Also added some of the Maya Road rubons to a scrap piece of orange cardstock and used those as embellishments.  For my journaling simply sewed strips of some coordinating patterned paper and handwrote my journaling onto the strips.  Makes it look underlined!  To bring out his green shirt I added some green Thickers from my stash as part of the title and those white foam Thickers are some really old ones that were in my stash – I thought they looked a lot like the Wii font.”

************************************

Now here’s a mini-book from Jackie Laing. I alway love how family focused Jackie’s layouts are. You can really tell just how much she loves her family when you see her layouts. This month is no different.

“Family Mini Book”

family-mini-book

”I really love the mini book in this month’s kit. I decided to make a mini book about my Family. I used the gorgeous ribbon in this month’s kit to make a bow for the front of my book. It is a really easy way to make a fun embellishment! Simply tie your ribbon into a bow. Then I took my drop-a-dial and punched a whole right in the middle…then used a yummy brad from this month’s kit as the center! The perfect touch to keep the bow in place! I LOVEthe Maya Road rubons in this kit.  They went along way… I used some on all my layouts and this mini as well!

I’d like to share more layouts from November, but since I’m trying to write this email on my iPhone while on an airplane, I think it’s time to stop, publish and move on! I’ll share more tomorrow, I promise.

Fun tutorials

Monday, November 9th, 2009

I was poking around the Internet. Yes, I do this a lot. I find I send a ton of time online when I am traveling for my “real” job. This week I’m in Toronto, where it is super cold for this Arizona girl. I’m more than happy to lounge in my pajamas, order room service and surf the Web. It’s way too cold for me to do anything else.

Anyway, I found some cool tutorials I wanted to share.

I highly recommend you checking back often. It rocks.

And last, but not least … a tutorial on how to create some cool vintage looking earings.
