Things that make me happy

Posted on by crazydaisy

It’s Friday. I love Fridays. They make me so very happy. I’m almost always home on Fridays, even when I travel, and I get to spend special time with my baby boy and big girl.

There are lots of things making me happy right now. Here are a few.

This book:Life is a Verb: 37 Days to Wake Up. Be Mindful. And Live Intentionally.” Talk about a serious kick in the pants. If you need to jump start your life and feel more motivated, then read this book. I’m halfway through it and I feel incredibly inspired. I want to get off my butt and really live.

This song:“I and Love and You” by The Avett Brothers. My husband sent this song to me and it makes my heart melt.

This purse and these shoes, which are totally impractical, but so adorable.

This web site.I love shopping for my daughter, she’s tons of fun to dress and she’s quite the fashionista. So, I’m really trying hard to buy Hanna Anderson out!

This blog. And this one. And this one too.

Whatever might be making you happy today, embrace it. Before you know it, the day will be over and who wants to go a whole day without smiles and happiness? Have a great day.

Get your Gesso on

Posted on by crazydaisy

The Crazy Daisy Family is blessed to include some extremely talented ladies serving on our design team. One of them, Miss Kim, is sharing her amazing talents with us today with this awesome Gesso Paint Rag tutorial. (Thank you Kim! We always love it when you’re our guest blogger!) So, let’s get our Gesso on ladies!

***************************************

“This technique is something I learned on National Scrapbook Day over at the Scrap in Style forum from the brilliant Lucy Folch, awesome Brazilian artist who has such innovative ideas.  I have modified mine a little but I must credit Lucy with the basic gesso – paint – rag technique.

gesso1

I used the Making Memories kraft album included in the September kit, but you can also do this on a heavy chipboard or cardboard.

The key to this technique is pre-planning the layout.

gesso2

Gather some chipboard pieces and any other items that you want to include on the layout and place them where you want them.

gesso3

I used the cute paisley pieces along with some other pieces from my stash. Since this is going to be an album for my stepdaughter’s end of season horse shows for this year, (photo above) I wanted to use the horse piece I had from Martha Stewart, but I peeled off the slick pattern from the top so my gesso will adhere.  I put the horse on the back of the album.

gesso4

Next, since I want to add some pieces of patterned paper to my finished project, I need to measure and cut those out before adhering my chipboard.  I also made a quick sketch of my layout and numbered my pieces to correspond with my cutout paper for easy placement later.

gesso5

Once I have my layout how I want it, I start gluing down all my chipboard pieces.  I did not glue the word “ALEX” down yet because I want to use those awesome 7Gypsies letters as they are.

gesso6

After the glue is dried completely, cover the entire project in gesso.  Get it in every crevice and corner of the chipboard pieces.  I use a smaller dry brush to get any excess out of those same crevices and corners.

gesso7

Now let the gesso dry completely while picking out four or five colors of acrylic paint to coordinate with the paper and other pieces.

This is the really fun and messy part of the project – let your creativity run wild!

gesso8

You will need to use a thin consistency with the paint, you may want to experiment on a scrap piece of chipboard or cardboard first.  I began on one side and worked with a color then switched to my next color and so on to blend each color together.  Just keep working with the paint until satisfied.  Don’t worry, it won’t be perfect!

gesso9

Next take an old rag while the paint is still wet and wipe and dab the project to remove some of the paint.  If you remove more than you want, just add more paint.  If the paint gets too dry, wet your rag – this method is mistake proof!

gesso-10

When you are happy with how it looks, let this part of the project dry.  You might want to add some glimmer mist or another mist of choice to jazz it up.

gesso-11

Once dry, you can add on everything else.  I distressed my pattern paper and glued it down.  I also distressed my chipboard letters with a small emery board and some paint and glued those down.

gesso-12

As an afterthought I decided to use the Stickles that were included in my kit, and I love how they look on this project!

gesso-13

Once that dried, I got my Sharpie out and outlined, added a photo in middle and used some Ranger Glossy Accent that I had in my stash on the word “ALEX” so it would have some shine to match where I used the Stickles.

The album is now finished and ready for my pages to be done inside!

Wonderful Wednesday Inspiration

Posted on by crazydaisy

I have an old friend who has always told me, “What you think about, you bring about.” She is the queen of positive thinking. I have been trying to adopt her attitude in all I do (I’m not that good at it, but I’m trying). So, when I got out of bed this morning I thought, “This is going to a wonderful day … in spite  of the fact my back is aching; I miss my family; and I’m tired. It’s going to be a wonderful Wednesday.”

To help myself be more inspired and really think this is gonna be a wonderful day, I turned to the Crazy Daisy Design team for a little inspiration. Here’s what Kim Whitten has been working with the October Main Kit.

The cover of Kim's mini book.

The cover of Kim's mini book.

“This board book screamed for simplicity to me. I decided to work outside my proverbial box on this one and not use any gesso, grunged up edges or lining everything with a sharpie. In fact, I didn’t even use a Sharpie!!! *GASP* (crazy, I know!) ;0)

I wanted to showcase B&W photos I’ve taken of Angus, my black mini schnauze,r over the last couple of years and this album was perfect for that. I printed 4×6 landscape photos and used my corner rounder on every photo. I then put together some simple designs on the facing pages and added few embellishments and some of my favorite quotes about dogs with my white uniball.

I love this little treasure and I think this method would be great for a child, husband, friend, hobby, etc. It was fairly simple because I didn’t have to “think” through every page as a new layout.”

And here is a wonderful layout Kim created using the same kit ….

Here’s a look at what you can do with the mini-book in October Kit courtesy of Miss Jackie:

my-cherished-memories-mini-close-up

“I used this months awesome mini that came in the kit to make a book about my vacation to Ontario! I love this months kit…it came bursting with super cute chipboard alphas … a girl can never have to much chipboard! It also came with gorgeous metal embellies! I used one of the embellishments as part of my title for my book !And I stapled ruffles in the gorgeous velvet ribbon …t he perfect touch for my mini cover!

Every month I have left overs from my kit … because each kit is packed with awesome goodies … so I used some chipboard paisley pieces from the September Kit! I filled them with bling to add some pop! The papers … and the embellies in the October kit are AMAZING!!! I don’t know how Kimberly and Jennifer do it but they pick out the most amazing papers … and perfect coordinating embellishments every month!”

Happy Monday

Posted on by crazydaisy

Happy Monday to you all. I want to share all the happiness I have in my home …. bottle it up and send it to you. I have the world’s happiest baby. I really do. Each day he wakes with the biggest smile on his face. In just six short months, he’s taught me to embrace the goodness we see in the world and just be happy. Right now, my little guy has an ear infection. You’d think that would get him down. Nope. He’s still the jolliest little fella I know. As he hacks up yucky mucus, blows snotty bubbles from his nose and rubs his achy ear … he does it with a smile and a giggle. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we all aproached life with the joy and happiness of my little boy?

As I looked through the layouts that our design team submitted for October, I see so much happiness. I see the joy of family. The excitment of discovery. And the delight of family.

Here’s a peek into Grace’s happy world. Check back tomorrow for a look at Jackie’s happy mini-book!

Say Cheese

-I loved the reds and black that the kit have but with these fun pics I wanted to go a little informal so I opted for the 3bugs in a rug green pattern paper as my foundation.
-I thought the owl stamp was very cute and made that my main embellishment in this page, coloring it and adding a little bit of paper too.
-The polka dot letters weren’t really popping out so I added some red lines inside the chipboard to make it pop out more.
-The scallop border was actually part of the Chatterbox letter packaging. I loved the look of it so I cut it out and because it had adhesive already on the back, it was a cinch to add it to the page.
-Another part of the packaging that I used here was the thread that came from the minibook. I used it to add more interest and texture to my buttons. Because the trim was thick, the buttons couldn’t go on flat so I adhered it with pop up dots instead.

She is our treasure

-I was inspired to create this layout by the journaling block that came in the kit. I knew that product should be used for some meaninful journaling. I found this picture of my mom and son and decided to document the treasure that she is to us.
-Because I am no professional photographer, most of my priceless pics has some kind of unwanted stuff in the background like here. There were some kitchen stuff in the background that stuck out so I covered it with flowers. I created one of the flowers with the ribbon in the kit, gathering it into a circle, sewing a little of it in place and then adding a gem in the middle.
-The title wasn’t coming out very well against the black background so I added some handstitching underneath.
-I also created a little collage of items on the top right of the page using the rubons in the kit. One of the flowers was transfered onto red cardstock, cut out and then adhered with pop up dots.

-I love this page! This one was by far my favorite to do.
-I was able to incorporate a lot of texture here besides the flat paper. I have the fabric (green on the bottom); the crochet flower; the layered title; the lace cardstock and the machine stitching.
-I cut the fabric with pinking shears to prevent it from fraying to much. Adhered it onto the paper then stitched it. This way it would not move when I ran it through the sewing machine.
-I added rubons and layered brads over flower button here too.

Chinatown Explored

chinatown-explored
-I really like it when I can grab a kit like this one and make a five pages includinga double page spread! What a great bang for my buck! Here I used the chipboard letters, felt flower, brad, rubons, metal accent and lace cardstock.
-The felt flower was looking a little dull to me so I added some of those basic grey rubons on it. Just remember that the texture of the felt is very coarse so you will have to rub really hard for the image to transfer and take your time in peeling the rubon sheet. I think this is a great way to spruce up any felt accent.
-Because I had tons of pictures in this layout, I ran out of space to add my journaling so I decided to add it as a long strip between some of my pictures. It turned out great. Remember if you don’t have a 12×12 printer (like me) just use the 8 1/2×14″ paper size and put 2″ margin on the right for you to get a 12″ strip of journaling.

Family dinner

-Here I experimented in designing with 4×6 photos. I didn’t want to crop them so I created a block design with them incorporating pattern paper and ribbons from the kit.
-I picked three colors that I thought would complement the green very well and then sewn ribbons between the gaps.
-I loved the big tag that came in the kit and used that to hide my journaling. I attached the tag with a chipboard and brad combo.

October Guest Designer: Celeste Smith

We are so thrilled to have the talented Celeste Smith as our guest designer for October. Here’s a little but about Celeste.

October's Guest Designer, Celeste Smith

October's Guest Designer, Celeste Smith

“I live in Connecticut with my wonderful husband of ten years, Terry and our two cute boys, Adam (7) and Sam (5). They are my primary scrapping subjects and my sometimes unwilling models.

Scrapbooking is my creative outlet. As a full-time competitive analyst at a large insurance company, my days are filled with details and numbers. My evenings are filled with patterns, color and design. A real stress reliever!

My style has been consistently clean and graphic with a bit of funkiness thrown in for good measure. I love clean straight lines and lots of color. Don’t get me started talking about scrapbook product – I am a collector extraordinaire!

I’m excited to have the opportunity to guest design for Crazy Daisy Kits! “

And now for the really exciting part. Here’s what Celeste did with our October 2009 Main Scrapbooking Kit.

October Kits are here

Posted on by crazydaisy

Can you believe that it’s already October?

Seriously, time is just flying by. My little boy is going to be 6-months-old on Sunday. And it feels like he just arrived. It’s going to be Christmas before I know it and I’m not ready. Were in the heck has all the time gone?

With the arrival for October, we have some awesome kits available. Our main kit features a 7 Gypsies Black Board Book, which I love. It will be perfect for all the Halloween pictures I’ll be taking. In fact, it might even end up being a gift for my brother. He and his soon-to-be-wife are getting married on Halloween. My daughter will be a flower in their wedding, so I was thinking about making them a Halloween themed album as a gift. It would be really great if I get it all done before the wedding and then can just add the pictures later! Oh, I’m so excited about this kit. So many possibilities. The other notable items are the really cool specialty paper from Making Memories (think flocked and fancy!).

And, the add-on kit is equally as adorable, just smaller. If you’re not sure about joinin our club … then start with an add-on kit. In fact, if you order an add-on kit before the 10th of October, we’ll throw in a free gift with your order. And if you already subscribe to our main kit …then just send me an email telling us you want to the add-on kit too. We’d love to send you a free gift as well!
